SAVE LIVES, DON’T DRIVE DISTRACTED!

Posted on Posted in Cassie Gannis, Distracted Driving, Safe Driving, Teen Driving

Many of you already know I am passionate about getting the word out to DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE, DON’T  DRINK AND DRIVE, and DON’T DRIVE DISTRACTED. Many states have already passed laws forbidding drivers to text while driving. But yet, deaths still occur! Many people think they are a safe driver and yet don’t think twice about picking up their phone while driving because nothing bad will ever happened to them. “Distracted drivers on America’s roads cause a minimum of 3,100 deaths and over 400,000 injuries each year.” http://www.enddd.org/end-distracted-driving/   I have gone from schools to communities speaking about NOT DRIVING DISTRACTED. The simple fact is I just want to SAVE LIVES!

The statistics for teens are mind-blowing! More than 3,000 teens die each year in crashes caused by texting while driving. Approximately 2,700 teens are killed in drunk driving accidents. More than 50 percent of teens admit to texting while driving. Texting while driving is the leading cause of death for teens! Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers or MADD have some horrifying statistics regarding teens and drinking!  http://www.madd.org/underage-drinking/underage-drinking-statistics.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjw2_23BRDb_qbvzK3X8M8BEiQAg87AFxwzw6Lt2XN6-9U8AuFIPQBw1yFlpsctGQH-JX8YajUaAnvd8P8HAQ

  • TEEN ALCOHOL USE KILLS 4,700 PEOPLE EACH YEAR – THAT’S MORE THAN ALL ILLEGAL DRUGS COMBINED
  • KIDS WHO START DRINKING YOUNG ARE SEVEN TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE IN AN ALCOHOL-RELATED CRASH.
  • HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO USE ALCOHOL OR OTHER SUBSTANCES ARE FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL.
  • CAR CRASHES ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH FOR TEENS, AND ABOUT A QUARTER OF THOSE CRASHES INVOLVE AN UNDERAGE DRINKING DRIVER.
  • OVER 40% OF ALL 10TH GRADERS DRINK ALCOHOL.
  • ABOUT ONE IN SEVEN TEENS BINGE DRINKS, YET ONLY 1 IN 100 PARENTS BELIEVE HIS OR HER TEEN BINGE DRINKS.

Car after wreck

Listen to this driving facts:

“According to a study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving blind at 55-mph for the length of an entire football field.”

“Because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far one of the most alarming distractions.”

As a professional NASCAR and ARCA driver. I save my entire racing and high speeds for the track. There is never time for distractions or errors. Recently I have been moved by the high rate of deaths from teen’s texting while driving. Along with their lives they are taking the many innocent lives. Recently a mom and infant daughter were killed when a teen driver carelessly texted while driving. Along with this, 5 teens were killed in New England while driving on the way to a family cabin while the driver was texting. All of these senseless deaths. When I am out on the public road I am sure to maintain legal speed limits and never use my phone for any kinds of communication. I want you to obey all street speed signs and use your turn signals appropriately. You can always wait to adjust a radio, CD or temperature controls until you are at a complete stop. I want you to be sure to have all you attention on the road! Everything else, any activity, can be a distraction!

I want you to make a pledge:

NEVER DRINK or USE DRUGS WHILE DRIVING (Drink Responsible before thinking of getting behind a wheel)

NEVER TALK ON A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING. (Use a handsfree device)

NEVER APPLY MAKEUP or ATTEMPT GROOMING

NEVER EAT FOOD

NEVER ATTEMPT TO ATTEND TO OR DISCIPLINE A CHILD in another seat while the vehicle is in motion. PULL OVER!

NEVER EVER TEXT MESSAGE WHILE DRIVING!

Believe Driving Is A privilege and we should all use common sense.

Cars can be 2-tons weapons and should be handled with respect! IT TAKES ONLY TWO SECONDS but the IMPACT CAN LAST A LIFETIME!
